Introducing VIRL

Cisco's powerful network simulation platform

• Cisco virtual machines running the same network operating systems as used in Cisco’s physical routers and switches
• Powerful GUI for network design and simulation control
• Configuration engine that can build complete Cisco configuration
at the push of a button

Why VIRL?

POWERFUL AND PORTABLE

It's your flexible, all-in-one virtual networking lab — no more bulky network equipment and hours of wiring! And it's easy to extend your lab by linking to physical devices

OFFICIAL CISCO IMAGES

VIRL comes with a complete set of legal and licensed Cisco images, with new OS releases provided on a regular basis

AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION

Use Autonetkit to create bootstrap configurations, or enter your configs manually.

No matter your needs, VIRL makes things easier.

“So much more than a simulation tool”

As a network professional pursuing my CCIE in R&S,
I need something that I can just power up and use straightaway. In under 5 minutes, I had 10 IOSv routers running. I love that VIRL comes with all the Cisco OS images and updates. There are so many useful features, my favorite being the live visualization feature – and the team is constantly developing more.

"Sharing network models with customers"

I am happy to have a low cost, portable simulation tool that I can use to model and test networks. When my customers also install VIRL, I am able to share models with them, such as an initial model of their network as well as a proposed design after implementing a set of migration steps. They like being able to practice network changes on their model network. I find the bundled Cisco images in VIRL is a big win - the images make it quick and clean to get current Cisco images to include in the network models.

"Perfect complement for other
more theoretical network simulation tools"

We tried many tools for network simulation and emulation.
In comparison, the biggest advantage of VIRL is its ability to emulate realistic environments and use real-world tools (e.g., Wireshark). We replaced virtual testbeds with VIRL since we can just import different virtual machines as images.
Some of our favorite features are the ability to connect simulations to real networks, and Git integration, which allows us to share prepared labs easily.
